What your hair is really saying x
On reading clients beyond the chair, and the language of transformation.
Often people aren't fully aware of the message they're conveying - or what their hair is already saying about them before they've said a word.
What do you think your hair says about you?
In session, whether it's a private studio appointment or an editorial call - the conversation usually goes something like:
"What do you think?"
"Let's go glam fam."
"I don't want to invest much time in my style day to day."
"I want my hair to be multi-functional."
"My hair is an extension of my personal brand."
"I'm in a transition phase. New hair, new boo."
Transformation. Directional. Effortless. Adaptable. Longevity. Ultimate. Fun. These are the words people reach for. So the real question is: how much attention are you paying to the words you use when you sit in the chair?
Reading between the lines
Much of a hairstylist's job is reading between the lines of the experience someone is actually looking for. Ultimately, people are looking to enhance the version of themselves - and the lifestyle shifts they're moving through at any given time. The beautiful thing about hair, unlike skin, is that it regenerates. It grows as freshly formed fibre, ready to support whoever you want to become next.
Over the years, I've noticed people sometimes struggle to put language to what they're trying to say. So here's how I simplify the process to make the most of your time in the chair.
Start with how you want to feel
If the words are hard to find, images do the work instead. Personally I love going through references together - especially in a new client relationship. A good hairstylist talks through your references with you. Dissecting inspiration and integrating to reality.
Hair texture, honestly
Technically, everything starts with your hair type. Products and technique exist to support whatever you want to achieve, but how we get there begins with the realities of what you're actually working with.
Time and budget, on your terms
This varies depending on who I'm working with. For celebrity or editorial clients, I'm usually styling for a specific event - an on-the-clock departure time and a pre-agreed budget. For studio clients, the focus shifts to how much time you have in any given moment to recreate your desired outcome, and how that fits your rebooking rhythm. I work on an hourly, 1:1 private booking system, so the pace and budget move around your life - not the other way round.
The space between where you are and where you're headed
The only real question is how far you want to take it. Because your hair is already saying something.
